Ep. 5 – Rose of Valentine

Did you know that cut roses contribute to an additional of 360,000 metric tons of carbon dioxide just for Valentine’s Day alone?

Zahra:
Alfaaaa, one apple pie and extra hot cafe latte, alright?!

Alfa:
I’m busy, ask the barista, not me!

Hey, what is that in your hand?
Episode 5: Roses of Valentine

Cut roses are picked while still buds

Roses’ fates are a bit sad, since they were cut when they’re still in buds from a very far place, to prevent wilting. Why?

The time it takes from when farmers harvest them until they were displayed in a supermarket or a florist is pretty long; even up to a week. And that’s why their blooming lifespan is pretty short.

250 Million Roses Produced Only for Valentine's Day

Imagine, just that one “special day for lovers” alone adds 360,000 metric tons of carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions to the air, just for transportation and distribution.

An absolutely fantastic amount of emissions for something that will last only about a week!

Padma:
Yeah, that’s sadly true… That’s what happens to seasonal commodities...
